TWIR: Ford, Edmunds Come Up Huge

Seventeen of Virginia Tech’s 18 high school senior commitments were in action this past week.  Terrell Edmunds , Andrew Ford , Travon McMillian and Marshawn Williams  were among the top performers, each turning in monster performances in victory.

Top Performers

– How did Terrell Edmunds  do as Dan River’s primary ball-carrier last week? Pretty good. Edmunds rushed 29 times for 344 yards and five touchdowns as the Wildcats (3-1) defeated Martinsville, 32-28. Edmunds, who is being recruited by Virginia Tech as a cornerback, discusses his performance and more in a TSL Pass article coming out Wednesday evening.

– QB Andrew Ford had only nine completions (in 14 attempts) but threw for 348 yards and totaled six touchdowns (four passing, two rushing) as Cedar Cliff (Camp Hill, PA) defeated a previously unbeaten Hershey squad, 41-14. Check out the game story by clicking here.

Cedar Cliff is undefeated through four games this season.

– WR/CB Javon Harrison had seven receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown as Kathleen (Lakeland, FL) rolled to a 42-13 win over Ridge. Kathleen is now 3-1.

Travon McMillian was certainly fresh and ready to play off a bye week. McMillian, Hylton’s (Woodbridge, VA) star dual-threat quarterback, racked up 457 yards of offense and scored seven touchdowns (four passing, three rushing) in the Bulldogs’ 68-20 thrashing of Osbourn Park. Hylton is 3-0 heading into this week’s matchup against Patriot.

Michael Santamaria completed 4-of-5 passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns as Athens Academy (Athens, GA) defeated Our Lady of Mercy, 20-13. Athens Academy is 2-1. Santamaria plays several positions for his high school team but will be a place-kicker at Tech.

– One week after rushing for 308 yards and eight touchdowns in Phoebus’ (Hampton, VA) win over Warwick, Marshawn Williams was at it again, this time rushing for 239 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-21 victory over Denbigh. Williams has totaled 779 yards rushing and 13 scores in four games for the Phantoms (3-1).

Up next is arch-rival Hampton, where Williams played for three seasons before transferring to Phoebus. Check out this story on the Tech-bound tailback from the Daily Press.

Rundown of the rest of VT’s class of 2014

– WR Jaylen Bradshaw returned the opening kickoff 42 yards to help set up a touchdown. He also hauled in a 13-yard touchdown reception as Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) defeated Southeastern District foe Western Branch, 27-14. The Tigers are 3-0.

– TE/DL Xavier Burke and his Brunswick Bulldog (Lawrenceville, VA) teammates scored their first win of the 2013 season, downing Campbell 49-0. Brunswick is 1-2.

– Council Rock South (Holland, PA) lost to Bensalem by seven points to fall to 0-4 on the season.  OL Eric Gallo and his Golden Hawk teammates hope for win number one this Friday night against Pennsbury.

– Despite Tech-bound defensive end Vinny Mihota sidelined with a foot injury, Massaponax (Fredericksburg, VA) scored a victory over a tough Colonial Forge squad last week. Mihota, who has now missed two straight games, told the Fredericksburg Free-Lance Star that he will miss this week’s contest against Franklin County as well.

Massaponax is 4-0 on the year.

– Paramus Catholic (Paramus, N.J.), which features VT offensive line recruit Billy Ray Mitchell , is 3-0 following last week’s 35-21 win over DePaul. St. Ignatius of Ohio awaits this Saturday.

– DB/WR Shawn Payne helped L.C. Bird (Chesterfield, VA) to a 47-0 drubbing of James River. The Skyhawks (3-0) defense has surrendered only six points all season, pitching two shutouts in the process.

– Patrick Henry (Deshler, OH), which is led by senior OL Colt Pettit , earned a 21-3 road victory over Liberty Center. The Patriots improve to 3-1.

– WR Cam Phillips had five receptions for 68 yards as DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) pulled out a 26-21 win over St. John’s in WCAC action.  The Stags (4-1) take on rival Good Counsel next.

– Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) lost big to Miami (FL) Central last week, falling to 1-2 on the season. OL Tyrell Smith and company hope to rebound this week against DePaul.

– Stonewall Jackson (Manassas, VA), led by Virginia Tech-bound athlete Greg Stroman , lost to Woodbridge, 42-34. The Raiders have now dropped three straight and sit at 1-3 on the season.

– Bishop Ready (Columbus, OH) has had three consecutive blowout wins, including last week’s 49-19 victory over Whitehall-Yearling last Thursday. Star offensive tackle Brady Taylor saw his future team in action two days later, taking in Tech’s win over Marshall in Lane Stadium.

Bishop Ready is now 4-0 on the year.
