2019 National Championship Game: Live Blog

11:27 p.m.

There’s still about 10 minutes left but since Nick Saban has thrown in the towel (Jalen Hurts is in the game) we are too. Clemson reigns supreme over Alabama and the highlights are plentiful. Thanks for joining us for another successful and snarky liveblog.

11:03 p.m.

11:00 p.m.

Folks, Clemson is going to win the national title again and we know this in the third quarter.

What’s more is their youth is on display with Trevor Lawrence and Justyn Ross who’s having his coming out party with back-to-back circus catches. The Tigers’ dynasty is just starting.

10:41 p.m.

While it looked like the defender slipped on the garbage turf at blue jeans stadium, that was a big time 74-yard touchdown pass to Justyn Ross. He blew by the remaining defenders and this game is firmly in the hands of Clemson despite a missed PAT.

Trevor Lawrence now has 275 yards passing with two scores. That’s 23 unanswered points for Clemson.

10:33 p.m.

There have been some great offensive plays, but there have been some outstanding plays by defensive backs as well.

That fake field goal by Alabama never had a shot to make it. It wasn’t well blocked and there was nowhere for the runner to go if it was. Even the Crimson Tide coaches are having an off night.

9:53 p.m.

Clemson put together a nice drive until Alabama finally got some pressure at the end to force a field goal. Clemson leads 31-16 headed into halftime and the hotly anticipated show by Imagine Dragons.

‘Bama gets the ball to start the second half.

9:43 p.m.

It’s almost halftime which means it’s time to get fired up for the show! Meanwhile, Clemson just executed a beautiful corner blitz by Trayvon Mullen who’s having himself a night.

Time for the two-minute drill…

9:30 p.m.

As the game has progressed Tua and Trevor have swapped spots. Lawrence now appears very settled and is making great plays against pressure. Confusion in the Tide secondary has helped matters. Travis Etienne can now add a touchdown reception on the night. That’s a true freshman to a true sophomore…

9:18 p.m.

Travis Etienne now has two touchdowns on five carries. Nice night so far despite limited touches. Trevor Lawrence has looked pretty rough, but when he’s connected it’s been for big plays. I’d try and continue these short passes to the backs to set up another deep ball later.

Clemson leads 21-16 with 11:38 left in the second quarter.

9:10 p.m.

Despite that crazy stat line (which includes a pick six), the Tigers’ defense stepped up and held ‘Bama to a field goal. The Crimson Tide are up 16-14 at the start of the second quarter.

As predicted earlier today, this game is taking forever. The lack of running is wildly entertaining but not conducive to a reasonable bedtime.

Alabama’s special teams are struggling. They now have a kickoff out of bounds and a missed PAT.

9:04 p.m.

It’s true. There’s zero question that these teams have more depth across the board than any other programs in the country. I maintain that’s not a good thing, but it’s the reality that college football is facing.

8:52 p.m.

Well, Alabama isn’t perfect and they miss the extra point after a nice drive and pretty touchdown play that fooled the entire defense.

Matt Thompson made a depressing point in reference to ACC scheduling. It’s time to reshuffle the deck to be sure.

8:42 p.m.

Even by California and stadium prices, this is a joke. For shame Levi’s Stadium.

8:39 p.m.

I’ve thought for a while now that Travis Etienne is low-key one of the top backs in the nation. Sure he’s now got 23 touchdowns on the season and more than 1,500 yards, but he gets lost in the shuffle a bit with their dominant defense and flashy quarterbacks (at least in the national conversation).

That score was set up by a pretty 62-yard pass from Trevor Lawrence who finally got comfortable on that drive.

8:30 p.m.

Quite a throw by Tua to shake off that pick. Jerry Jeudy made a pretty double-move on the 62-yard score to tie the game at seven apiece. Tua’s ball placement is really second to none on downfield throws.

I’ll never understand SEC fanbase’s fascination with pom-poms. They don’t make noise. I guess they look cool though?

It’s also important to note that AT&T is fueled by passion. That’s key to improving the quarterly outlook.

8:21 p.m.

After an ugly three and out on offense, Clemson comes back with a 42-yard touchdown on an interception return by A.J. Terrell. Tua Tagovailoa is an outstanding quarterback but he made a bad read on that one outside. Huge play for the Tigers.

Pregame Update @ 8:00 p.m.

Alabama’s band has 400 people in it which seems like too many, then again I’m not a band director. The main takeaway right now is that there are a ton of empty seats right now. Still a few minutes until kickoff so it should fill in, but this might be a fairly chill atmosphere.

Our good friends Joey Weaver and Mike McDaniel have an excellent preview podcast you can check out above if you’re killing time before the big game. Tonight, I’ll be live blogging the event as we slog through what will likely be an interminably long broadcast (featuring Lil Wayne and Imagine Dragons!).

All this on a school night, so catch a nap beforehand if you can kids. See you all tonight!
